INDIA BITES YOU SOMEHOW - TRUE-LIFE TALES of 40 Westerners Discovering the Sacred Within the Chaos of One Magnificent Country

Will your next step lead you to nirvana or land you in cow dung?

INDIA BITES YOU SOMEHOW is a rollicking collection of true stories that take you deep into the heart of the magical, mysterious Indian experience. Forty people from nineteen countries share their journeys -- both worldly and sacred -- from the 1960s to the present, where they encountered such questions as…

Should I follow the yogi into the jungle to pursue man-eating tigers? Should I give this persistent, maimed child even more rupees? Dare I punch the porter who just pinched me on the behind, or argue with the government official who refuses to extend my visa? Is this guru really enlightened? Will I survive this tsunami rushing toward me? Will I ever be able to get off the toilet?

These narratives – moving, terrifying, hilarious, awe-inspiring -- were recorded by the holy mountain Arunachala in South India, considered by many to be the most powerful place on Earth. It is also where the great sage of the 20th century, Ramana Maharshi, lived for most of his life. Both Mountain and sage have had a profound influence on teachers in the past as well as many present well-known spiritual teachers today.

If you have been to India, you might recognize yourself in these pages. If you would like to come to India, this is advance warning, but with lots of encouragement. If you know you’ll never make it to India, this will take you deep into its essence, minus the scary microbes. And you will find out why, as one Canadian woman says, “Anything is possible in India! It really is! You might go crazy in the process, but it is possible!”

I am a cancer patient who has been given the all clear for Stage 4 Lymphoma. India is on my bucket list. In late January I am going for 29 days to Southern India. This book I cannot put down. All stories are true life, whether they are about homeless dogs, funeral pyres or the unending generosity of the Indian heart. This book is a wealth of knowledge. It is not a guide book to the various temples, but a guide to the soul of India. I feel that I have a much better understanding of snippets that comprise India.

INDIA BITES YOU SOMEHOW TrueLife Tales eBook Kai Mayerfeld Chris Fallon Reviews

I have never been to India, but I think the same kind of book could have been written about my adventures in China. Or Japan. Any trip to a land so different from our own can only be filled with wonder.

The strength of this book is that it provides the perspectives of many individuals. Taken alone some of the stories might be suspect, but as a whole they provide a wonderful picture. Wonderful job of editing, well conceived.

If ever you do publish a hard copy, you have in me a willing customer. I will be taking off on my own journey to India in a few months and I am glad to have had this introduction to add to all the other literature I have been reading.
I really enjoyed it. It is like sitting around with a group of friends who have been to India and are getting ready to move there. They tell stories about their travel, their guru, spiritual experiences, trying to plant trees and teach and heal...and help. Very inspiring.
These stories are interesting however a lot of them date back to the 60's and 70's. If this was your time and you were an adventurous hippy you might like it. I just returned from a trip to India and found that basically what is talked about in these stories was not applicable to my trip but the book is entertaining and unique which is why I rated it 4 stars.
India is an extraordinary country in which no visitor can leave without having been bitten in some way or another. At one end of the spectrum, these bites infect one's whole being, promoting heart-opening experiences and recurring desires to return, and at the other end they can ellicit total revulsion and promises to never return. Having had many of both experiences there sometimes several times in one hour,I can easily relate to the stories in this wonderful book. This e-book presents a collection of diverse adventures which are both entertaining and inspiring. Kai describes the sadness an Indian family feels at not being able to offer her more food after providing her with all the food in their house, Franz tells a hair-raising story of landing in Delhi in the chaos following Indira Gandhi's assassination, Michael shares how he feels so at home in India that he is unable to leave. The book is well organized into themes, Chris' photography supports the stories beautifully, and the glossary at the end is helpful for readers who have no experience with Sanskrit words. I would recommend this book to anyone who has already been bitten by the India bug and as well to anyone who would like to have an idea of what it is all about.
Some interesting and humorous stories, but the overall impression of the book I got was negative. There seemed to be way too much focus on the negative side of India. Visitors to India had to deal with bugs, corruption, dangers, government incompetence, diarrhea, bad food etc. It has made me wonder if I really want to go to India or if I should choose another country. Maybe this is a perfect description of India, I don't know. But if you are excited to go to India then don't read this book.
Kai Mayerfield's book takes you by surprise. It is a compilation of interviews which she weaves together with remarkable skill. What you have is an incredible picture of spiritual seekers and the bizarre, amusing and mystical happenings that surround them. Some interviews are very brief and others tell the whole story of people's lives at Arunachala and of their selfless contributions. In these interviews there is something special that is caught, captured, transmitted. India is a magical place, not always easy but definitely memorable. Kai Mayerfield's arrangement of tales and choice of interviewees portrays a captivating image of this place called India.
Although I have visited Tiruvannamalai for over 20 years now, I found a special magic in Kai's portrayal of Ramana, Arunachala and of the people who are attracted to live in Tiruvannamalai. These interviews have both humor and depth.
Tiru friends suggested this book to me and I am so glad they did, as reading it brought back the beauty of how each of us responds to the inner call. One can never tire of stories like these. There is such a beauty in the call of Arunachala and Kai's book has brought it all back with such freshness, lightness and focus.
I am not sure how it is that I ran across this book but I am sure glad that I did. It has been so many years since I have been to India and this book put me right back there in the most wonderful way. Kai captured the good and bad of India thru the story's of others along with her deep feelings for India. I believe my travels in India totally changed my life. These writings reflect very well how it is impossible to experience India without completely changing your thought process and re-examining your life. I cannot express enough how wonderful it was to step back in time for me and refresh myself on what a dramatic impact the country and people of India had on my life. Thank you so much for providing me this opportunity by your collection of other peoples experiences. I only wish the book never ended.
